Application example 1

Utilising industrial exhaust heat in a German steel work.

A German steel work relies on the specialist Spillling in order to optimally utilise the saturated steam at 19 bar arising from a heat treatment process: The existing steam generation was retrofitted with a back pressure turbine.

The steam that is available in fluctuating amounts is used to generate electricity by a single-stage Spilling turbine, before being almost completely re-cooled over an air-cooled condenser. Using the exhaust steam afterwards is at present not possible, however, also its utilisation is intended in the long-term.

Benefits for the customer

  • Improved CO2 balance due to energy generation using the operational waste heat
  • Cost savings due to domestic electricity
